Revolutionize your high-frequency word instruction with this simple lock word strategy and review cards. It is important that students learn how to read high-frequency words while they are learning how to decode. This card deck allows you to break down the most commonly used words in the English Language for your students.

How we use them:

This deck utilizes the “lock strategy” in order to break words up. This color-coded system includes…

  • Green lock words (decodable words)
  • Yellow lock words (future decodable words)
  • Red lock words (phonetically irregular words)

The double-sided cards allow you to determine how much visual support you’re providing students as they practice reading these words. Use the black and white side to test their knowledge or flip over the card to visually cue students using the color-coded strategy.

Grade Level Target:

Intended for students in grades K-2

What’s Included:

  • 155 cards shipped in a shrink-wrapped stack so that you can choose your preferred storage or binding method for the cards
  • Each card is 2-sided with one black & white side & one color-coded side so that you can determine how much support to give students when using the cards.
  • Each 3.5” x 5” card is printed on heavy-duty cardstock to allow for long-term and repeated use
  • The list of words is derived from a compilation of Dolch words, Fry words, and a list of the most commonly occurring words based on analysis from the Oxford English Corpus so that you have a comprehensive list of the most applicable words.
